June 10th, 2002
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen

    • Financials are right on track.
    • Income came from book fair coupon books and Schwann's.
    • Expenses were for staff appreciation and playground fund.

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage

    • PRT has received a number of Thank You notes. A recent one from Joyce Price was routed.
    • Sally Foster is a go for this fall! Our rep is Tim Prust and Tammy Wacek will be chairing with a committee of Brenda Wagner and Dawn Gold.
    • It was agreed to let the Badger Ridge Student Council (which consists partly of CKCS students) have the entertainment book market. Previously, we had sold about 30 book which didn't add up to big $ and it is viewed as a goodwill gesture to let Badger Ridge Student Council have the business.

  4. Digital Editing - Bill Lemberg

    • Bill was going to do a demo of some Digital Video Editing equipment that PRT has committed to $300 toward purchasing more equipment, but Bill didn't make it.
    • The additional equipment has a price tag of $19,000.

  5. School Update - Dr. Guziewski

    • Interviewing continues.
    • Positions filled are First Grade, Fourth Grade, Fifth Grade Teachers, and two Special Education Teachers.
    • Still need to fill Middle School Math teacher and Special Education Assistant.
    • No matches were found in the first round of interviewing for the Director position. The second round of interviewing is beginning with four new candidates.
    • End of the year activities have been keeping things busy including field trips to Great America and the Dells.

  6. PRT Meeting Schedule - Kathy Pielage

    • Alternative times were discussed for the PRT meeting which would enable the Governing Council meeting to start earlier. The group opted for status quo (second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m.) for a couple reasons. If it were on a different night this would require additional evening commitments on the part of the folks that attend both PRT and GC. The incentive of wrapping up the PRT meeting by the time GC starts has helped keep the PRT meetings on track.
    • It was agreed to keep the Book Fair w/ the Science Fair in the evening on May 2nd.
    • A request was also made to have Muffins w/ Mom and Donuts w/ Dad for the Fourth and Fifth graders. Kathy Pielage will follow-up to see if this can happen.

  7. Volunteer Recruitment for PRT - Kathy Pielage

    • About twenty volunteers so far including some new parents with incoming Kindergartners!
    • We still need a Back to School Night chairperson among other misc. positions.

  8. GC and PASS Board Election Results - Kathy Pielage

    • Elections are complete and the new elected officials were getting oriented.
    • Of the 225 ballots, 83 were returned. This was thought to be about the same percentage as previous years. Ideas to increase participate included voting at the Science Fair and web or e-mail ballots.

  9. Playground Update - Kathy Pielage

    • The equipment is ordered!
    • Build day is set for Saturday, August 3rd. We need volunteers!! Contact Karen Christianson if interested.
    • We still need $500 to pay for the equipment we have ordered. As a secondary goal we would like to raise an additional $1,200 to buy a bank of swings which was the number one requested item in the kid's survey.

  10. Staggered PRT Exec Board Terms - Kathy Pielage

    • To facilitate smooth operation of the PRT organization, staggered exec board terms are being introduced. A new Vice-President and Secretary will start this fall. The Vice-President position is a one year term as VP and then a one year term as President. The Secretary position is a two year commitment. The Treasurer position will also be a two year commitment with the current term expiring summer 2003.
    • Karen Christianson will check if she has an electronic copy of they bylaws so they can be ammended.

  11. Logoed Apparel - Patrick McCormick
    • CKCS Logoed Apparel was offered two years ago.
    • It was discussed that it is time to offer it again to help boost school spirit and possibly to raise enough money to buy each teacher/staff member a shirt as a gesture of appreciation.
    • Sara McCormick will be looking into getting this going for the start of the school year.

May 13th, 2002
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen

    • Financials are right on track.
    • The book fair and box tops brought in money this month.
    • Money was spent on Weekly Readers and mini-grants for letter writing and a middle school incentive.
    • The Celebrate Learning evening came in with expenses under budget!

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage

    • After the spring program PRT gave flowers to Pat Siemen, Susan Dotson and Jessica Monk for the extra hours put in for rehearsal. Flowers were also given to Bonnie Valley to recognize the extra time she devoted to the Art Display at the Science Fair. It is the committed staff that makes a great school!

    • Teacher Appreciation Breakfast was held May 1. We are receiving Thank you notes from the teachers. Thanks for Tammy Wacek for Coordinating these meals for the last 2 years. Nancy Connnelly has volunteered to coordinate Teacher Appreciation Breakfasts for next year. She will be working with the parents of Badger Ridge Middle School so that all teachers will be recognized. Panerea Gifts Certificates were given to those CKCS teachers who only work in the afternoon. We have received thank you notes from these two teachers Janet Hunderdosse and Lisa Gleboff.

    • Thank you to Pat Siemen who directed a beautiful Sping Program. Thank you to Susan Dotson, Jessica Monk and Ian Gaylor for your support in helping to make this program such a success. A thank you to Beth Phillips who arranged for cookies and punch to be served after the performance. Culvers and Millers need to be thanked as well for providing the food.

  4. School Update - Dr. Guziewski

    • Congrats to Cami Kieler, 5th grade and Katelynn Kermicle, 6th grade who attended the State Math Tournament! Katelynn finished third in individual scores and Cami finished twelfth.
    • A new student from Florida recently joined CKCS.
    • Dr. Guziewski became part of a Science Fair experiment by participating in a taste test.
    • May 3rd was the all school musical which was a great event, but it there wasn't quite enough time. This event will be in the evening next year along with International Night so there won't be such a time crunch.
    • Congrats to Kami Keeler and Katlyn Kermicle for going to the state math tournament!
    • May 8th Field day had good weather. The older kids were providing guidance and helping the younger kids.
    • First grade, fifth grade and cultural liason positions have been filled.
    • Candidates are being interviewed for fourth grade, middle school and special education.
    • Mom's and kids alike enjoyed Muffins with Mom day.
    • Budgets are being adjusted to accomodate the almost half million dollar district-wide budget reduction being done to facilitate more funding for staff merit increases.
    • $1,000 Spanish grant was received from the Department of Public Instruction.
    • Work is being done with the Individual Education Program to place special education students.
    • Bank of Verona facilitated a seminar for educators to hear what skills are needed in the work place and what types of opportunties such as internships are available for students.

  5. Sally Foster Replacement Brainstorming - Kathy Pielage

    • The consensus was to stick with the fall Sally Foster fund raiser. It was thought that people have come to expect this fund raiser and plan to purchase their wrapping paper at this time. It may be too much risk to switch the type of fund raiser or even vendors.
    • Other ideas were also discussed such as selling picture frames when school photo orders are placed. Some concern was expressed that picture frames aren't a consumable product and therefore might not generate the annuity of revenue that wrapping paper does. It was also thought that the frames would need to differentiate themselves with something like the school logo on them.
    • There are tons of other fund raising options/ideas, but a lack of volunteers to take the ball and run with it.

  6. Volunteer Recruitment for PRT - Kathy Pielage

    • The volunteer forms will go out via back pack express. These forms help us to formulate committees for all the activities that PRT does throughout the year.
    • There are still plenty of opportunities to get involved!

  7. Nominations for GC and PASS Board - Kathy Pielage

    • The ballots were mailed out and must be postmarked before May 17th in order to be counted. Ballots will be tabulated on May 24 with results sent out in the Courier.

  8. Playground Update - Kathy Pielage

    • We've been turned down by both Hasbro and Lands' End on our grant applications.
    • We currently fall $7,000 short of the $22,000 needed to improve our playground.
    • Fund raisers such as selling popcorn at Hometown days was discussed, but these will delay installation of the playground equipment until Spring 2003.
    • The need to apply for more grants was also suggested.
    • PASS is offering to match parental donations dollar for dollar up to a total of $3,500. Donations are tax deductible.
    • To install the playground equipment by this fall will require coming up with the $7,000 by June 7th.

  9. Calendar Planning for 2002-2003 - Kathy Pielage
    • A draft schedule for the upcoming school year was shared. The schedule needs to be approved by the School Board yet.

April 8th, 2002
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen

    • Income from Target is looking better than it is due to a check coming in this year from transactions that happened last year.
    • Mini-grant expenditures occurred this month for items such as counselor's game, movie tickets, small playground items such as jump ropes.
    • Pizza Hut SCRIP was purchased to buy all the pizza for the night of the Science Fair. Pizza Hut offers a 9% rebate.
    • An idea to advertise SCRIP for the back to school time was mentioned along with the idea of purchasing some SCRIP to have on hand so people wouldn't have to wait to get their SCRIP.

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage

    • A procedure for purchase of books with money generated from book fairs has been established.
    • The book profits from the Book Fair will be ordered out of the Scholastics Catalogue with input from Carol Gautsch, the LMC director and the CKCS teaching staff. Carol Maxon, the CKCS LMC assistant will combine the suggestions, check the current collection to make sure the book is not already in the collection. Carol Maxon will place the order. She will check the order when it arrives and let PRT know what titles have been added to our collection.
    • About 40 residents attended the School Board Candidate Forum cosponsored by PRT. For future reference, the public library has video tapes available shortly after a community event such as this. The tape is also shown on the local cable channel too.
    • A big thank you goes out to Lori Flemming who organized the book swap! Thanks to her committee Karen Lindley, JoAnne Elfman, Hattie McLean, Linda Veneman!

  4. Governing Council/PASS Elections - Kathy Pielage

    • One Kindergarten parent has expressed an interest in a three year term on Governing Council which leaves two positions on Governing Council and one on PASS.
    • People are voted into a position in Governing Council or PASS and then a subsequent internal election process determines who holds what position such as President, Treasurer, etc.

The Outreach Committee is part of the Governing Council and recommends that CKCS develop a cultural liaison position to help us connect with students in all neighborhoods.

    • Recruitment for a new Director of CKCS has begun. April 19th is the deadline for applications. The ideal would be to get the new person started while Dr. Guziewski is still on the job to faciliate a smooth transistion.

    • Kindergarten registration is on April 30th. The forms have been pre-mailed this year to enable parents to focus on getting to know the school.

    • A new "Student of the Week" incentive program has been implemented. Each week the teacher of each class selects two children as Student of the Week for good behavior in a predetermined area such as Lunch Room, Phy Ed, etc. The area under review each week is not known by the students. 6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen

    • Every line item doesn't match the budget but the bottom line is that we're on budget.
    • Moving our remaining $2,870 start up cost to a line item for Playground Improvement was discussed. Playground Improvement is considered start up costs. Also, when we apply for Playground grants we need to show that we are also putting our own money behind the project.

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage

    • None discussed.

  4. Governing Council Elections - Kathy Pielage

    • PRT is responsible for advertising and running the elections for thepositions for Governing Council and PASS. This involves ads in the paper as well as a snail mail letter home to all parents.
    • Volunteers are needed to assist in this election process. If you're interested in helping out contact 845-3396.
    • The importance of staggering the PRT positions was also discussed. As a result the PRT VP and Secretarial positions are alsofor volunteers for the upcoming school year.

  5. Mini-Grant Requests - Kathy Pielage

    • A new Mini-Grant request has been submitted by the new Guidance Counselor. Kathy Pielage will be working with Dr. Guziewski to determine the appropriate funding source.

  6. School Update - Dr. Guziewski

    • Students recited the Pledge of Allegiance on WOLX in both English and Spanish. The bilingual performance was thought to be a distinguishing factor from other presentations.
    • After school homework club on Tuesday/Thursday's for 4th grade and up has started.
    • There has been some parental feedback about too much homework. As a result, the staff is composing a homework guideline trifold which will level set expectations on homework levels. Also, teachers are attempting to balance test dates so students don't end up with too many tests on the same day.
    • "Virtual Schools" are starting to take shape. There is some debate as to whether these schools can be considered charter schools.
    • Communication plan being discussed to advertise charter schools in a document that describes the options to Verona Area School District residents.
    • Badger Ridge Middle School is sharing their keyboard and guitars with CKCS students.
    • A question was presented about what the official policy is if kids forget their boots or snow pants. Dr. Guziewski will reply at a later time.

  7. Playground Update - Kathy Pielage

    • Some great equipment photos and the potential site drawings were shared.
    • The existing playground would be improved to be AD&D compliant and would focus on the K-2 age group. While toward the back we would break new ground for a 3-5 age group playground.
    • We're looking at a cost from $28,000 - $48,000. Fund raisers of all types are being considered such as the option to buy a piece of equipment such as a ladder or slide.
    • A generic grant application has been developed. Feel free to submit this application to your employer or other charitable organizations. First pop or and e-mail so they can coordinate the Grant applications and maintain a master list of who we've applied to.

February 11th, 2002
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Hattie McLean
    • Due to technical diffuclties, the details of the Treasurer's report weren't available. However the general update was that is had been a slow uneventful month.
    • A special THANKS go out to Greg Tracy for doing the PRT taxes!!

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage
    • None discussed.

  4. Mini-Grant Requests - Kathy Pielage
    • A mini-grant for art department for about $200 was approved.
    • Four new mini-grant applications have been received.
    • A suggestion/question was made to PRT to just allocate a fixed dollar amount to each teacher rather than having the current mini-grant application process was discussed. The consensus was to keep the existing process for two reasons. One is that it encourages people to think about spending the money. Secondly, PRT has no guaranteed revenue stream.

  5. School Update - Dr. Guziewski
    • Tuesday/Thursday after school homework club is in the works. This would be initially targeted for 6-8 graders. Any kids will be welcome but some will be specifically referred to help them meet their academic requirements.
    • Summer school will likely be in July on the same schedule as other schools.
    • Enrichment classes (i.e. special interest clubs) have been meeting during recess. They appear to be a great success so far.
    • Hiring committee has been active recently hiring a Guidance Counselor who will be starting half time soon. She'll will focus on K-5 and be in the school Monday, Wednesday and Thursday's.

  6. Playground Update - Kathy Pielage
    • We need $10,000 - $15,000 to become ADA compliant. Another $15,000 would be needed to add other structures to expand the playground capacity.
    • Space for expansion is somewhat of an issue. We can't add in the back of the school because it would be too disruptive to those classrooms with windows outlooking that area. One idea mentioned was to move the fences in the front of the school forward to make room.
    • We've applied for a Hasbro grant that was referred to us by Dr. Conzemius.
    • Filling out this initial grant application with all of the substantiating info was alot of work, but now it can be reused for other grant applications.

  7. Science Fair - Kathy Pielage
    • Kids will have a second chance to sign up for a Science Fair project in March when the initial list of Projects is published.
    • April 26th is the big night for the Science Fair and Book Fair.

  8. Book Fair - Kathy Pielage
    • "Diving Into Reading" will be the theme.
    • Money earned from this event will be spent on books and possibly to jump start the playground fund raising campaign.
    • A new fund raiser was mentioned. It is called the Reading Jamboree. Each family will be given a booklet to be filled out with 7 different mailing addresses. An order form to order magazines will be sent to these seven names. The names generated would not become part of a mailing list for Scholatics or any other sales offer. For each completed booklet the school playground fund would get $3.00. This would be an easy way for children to be part of the fund raising efforts.
    • A coffee/breakfast will be held for the teachers to fill out their wish lists and to encourage research project related books to be included on the wish lists. What parents don't purchase, PRT will try to subsidize.
    • Books will be shipped to PRT and then stamped to indicate they are property of CKCS. This will enable identification of CKCS books in the event we would ever need to relocate to a different facility.
    • April 26th is the big night for the Science Fair and Book Fair.

  9. Survey results for start time and busing - Hattie McLean
    • The majority of responses indicated a preference for the 8:30 start time. For further details on the survey results contact Hattie ().

  10. Idea generating session- Science Fair moving to every other year alternating with International Night.
    • An option to hold the Science Fair every other year was discussed. No final conclusion was reached. From an academic standpoint it will be part of the curiculum each year to some degree even if there isn't and evening PRT sponsored Science Fair. On the home front, the Science Fair projects can be burdensome and the evening was viewed to be too long for kids to hang around their projects.

January 14th, 2002
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen
    • Kathy explained the financial transactions for the month. We are roughly on budget.
    • Congrats to Mrs. Klitzsch-Anderson for winning a $10 Barnes and Noble gift cert from SchoolPop.com.

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage
    • Book Fair - It turns out only about a dozen or less books weren't labeled as CKCS property. Efforts are in process to identify these books and label them appropriately and more importantly put processes in place to prevent this from recurring.

  4. School Update - Dr. Guziewski
    • Dr. Guziewski was out due to illness.
    • There will be a district-wide meeting on space issues on February 16th in Badger Ridge 8:00 - 11:30. This will be a "listening session" for administrator to hear concerns.

  5. Playground Update - Kathy Pielage
    • Kathy Pielage and Karen Christenson are meeting with Dr. Conzemius on January 18th to discuss how to proceed.

  6. Science Fair - Sue Wong
    • Plans were discussed that included participation from the UW!

  7. Special Interest Clubs - Sue Wong
    • Sue got a strong response to the survey and plans to get started in February with chess, book and French during recess.
    • This takes a comittment on the part of kids to attend and participate since volunteers are comitting their time to facilitate the clubs.

  8. Pros/Cons of K-5 Late Start Time - Kathy Pielage
    • Pros and cons were listed for the 7:30 vs. the 8:30 start time. It appeared there were more pros for the 7:30 start time such as space allocation, safer parking lot and better computer/library usage. However, the 8:30 schedule worked better for some families.
    • The conclusion was to do a survey to get a better representative input from the population of parents and pass this info along to school administration.

  9. Early Bus Arrivals & Cold Weather - Kathy Pynnonen
    • Due to time constraints this topic wasn't discussed in detail. However, this is still felt to be an important issue to get resolved!

December 10, 2001
6:30 p.m.

  1. Mission Statement - Kathy Pielage

  2. Treasurer's Report - Kathy Pynnonen
    • Tax Deductible Donations - people can make tax-deducitble charitable contributions to the school. These can be made specifically for a project, if they would like.
    • Kathy handed out a detailed treasurer's report. Sally Foster has not been paid yet, due to a miscalculation on Sally Foster's part. SCRIP continues to be ahead of budget.

  3. Old Business - Kathy Pielage
    • Book Fair
    • Family Fun Night - we actually made some money!

  4. School Update - Dr. Guziewski
    • The early release plan that has been proposed for next year, has hit a road block. Most site councils have decided this is not in the best interest of the elementary schools. The high school is still contemplating an early release schedule.
    • We had 2 student winners for the school bus saftey contest - Eileen Bayler and Brock Pavlik.
    • He is averaging over 100 phone calls per month.
    • Dr. Guziewski hopes to have a summary of last year's parent survey in the next courier.
    • They have now broken up staff meetings for K-5 and 6-8 with joint meetings as well.

  5. Playground Update - Karen Christianson
    • Student Survey Results - The kids were very interested in more swings and climibing equipment. They also had a vivid imagination as to what else should be on the playground.
    • Immediate Improvements - Some immediate improvements that will be happening are a map of the United States will be painted on the blacktop (per the request of the kids). We will need parent volunteers for this.
    • Equipment Inventory - Kathy Pielage and Sue Wong did an equipment inventory at the other elementary schools. We have signifcantly less equipment than the others, but based on enrollment figures, our perenctage is fine. The only thing is that we have all of our kids on the playground at once, which is higher than the other schools.
    • Extra Recess and parents helping - Kathy Pielage
      • We definitely need more than 1 parent at this extra recess. The other discussion was to have some kind of basic recess training for the parents. The teacher's aids could give a brief overview of what the parents are expected to do at recess and things to look for.

  1. Science Fair - Sue Wong
    • Sue has made many phone calls to the UW regarding presenters for the kick off of the science fair. Hopefully, we will have something nailed down shortly. Some of the areas we are looking at are physics, chemistry, and biotechnology. This will be mandatory for the 4th and 5th graders, volutary for the K-3, and the 6-8 graders will also be participating.

November 12, 2001

    • The drop off and pick up of students is going well.
    • There seems to be an increase of detentions after school. It seems to be a bigger problem with the K-5 kids.
    • We had 2 new students join us due to move in into the school district. A 2nd grader and a 6th grader.
    • He has begun the process of looking at the parent surveys. Hopefully we will have a good summary in the next couple of months.
    • The kids will be having a Code Red drill this week.
    • THe school district is talking about having 1 early release day every 2 weeks. This would take effect with the 2002-2003 school year. They are just in the talking stages at this point and looking for input from the parents.

  2. Family Fun Night - Gail Hintz
    • Sandy Hoel gave an update on the progress of this evening. It should be a lot of fun with pizza, games, a moon bounce, bingo, crafts and plenty of prizes. Doug the Jug will be performing from 6:45-7:30 in the cafeteria/step room. She is still in need of people to help set up and clean up.

      • No bike racks are available. They will need to be purchased. Action Item: Dr. Ed Guziewski will work w/ Dr. Conzemius to purchase bike racks.
      • It was thought a good location for them would be outside of the fence in front of the playground area.
      • Post Meeting Update: the bike racks have been ordered!!
    3. Kids' Crossing
      • Feedback external to the meeting was predominantly against PRT funds being donated to Kids' crossing indicating that we should focus on our own school and that one non-profit shouldn't donate to another non-profit. There was also some supportive feedback that thought it would be good public relations for the school.
      • The topic was further discussed and then put to a vote. The results were seven to five in favor of donating $100 to get a brick with the schools name on it.

Kathy Pielage will follow-up w/ Ms. Domoracki to find out what items on her wish list she would like PRT to consider funding.
