CORE KNOWLEDGE CHARTER SCHOOL GOVERNING COUNCIL November 13, 2000 The regular meeting of the Core Knowledge Charter School Governing Council was held on November 13, 2000 at Badger Ridge/Core Knowledge LMC. Notice requirements were met and a quorum was present. Governing Council members in attendance: Greg Anderson, Eric Bayler, Leslie Gilbert, Jessica Monk, Nye Pelton, Amy Willson, Bill Lemberg and Marykay Zimbrick. President Marykay Zimbrick called the meeting to order and the mission statement was read. No Audience Participation AnnouncementsGreg Anderson announced that Dr. Mowen and the Verona Area School Board would recognize CKCS students at the meeting on Monday, November 20, 2000. Parents and students will be notified this week. He also reported on the possibility of a CKCS awards banquet in the spring. Ingrid Beamsley reported that CKCS received the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission grant to fund the Mini-Opera project with Kitt Reuter-Foss. She also reported that CKCS has $1,172 to be used for Drug Free Schools programming, K-8. Informational Sessions about CKCS will be held on January 10 and January 18. Flyers were distributed describing the sessions. Ingrid also mentioned CKCS packets are now available to visitors and people inquiring about the school. On December 5, Greg and Ingrid will go to Wisconsin Rapids to present the dissemination grant and videotape created. It was also reported that Verona Even Start Family Literacy Program has been funded for an additional year. It was announced that Gregg Mowen has extended his visiting hours for December 11 and January 9 from 6-8 p.m. Greg made a final announcement that nametags for staff will be in place soon. Consent AgendaBill Lemberg brought up a discussion on voting procedures for the Badger Ridge representative. By whom and when is it decided that the Badger Ridge representative should vote on an item. The same question applies for the CKCS representative on the Badger Ridge Site Council. Bill Lemberg and Pat Krantz will ask this question at the next Badger Ridge Site Council and will bring an opinion back to the next Governing Council for consideration. Leslie Gilbert moved to approve the consent agenda items. Items include the approval of minutes of the October 9, 2000 meeting and the confirmation of vote not to proceed with the Comprehensive School Reform grant. Included, as well, is a confirmation of the vote to support the recommendation of the math committee with respect to the teaching of 8th grade math this year. The plan is as follows, eighth graders currently in Algebra 1, will continue with the Saxon Algebra 1 text, while supplementing with material from the Integrated Mathematics 1 text. Eighth graders who are currently in the Algebra ½ will continue with that curriculum. Also included in the consent agenda is the confirmation of the vote regarding a change in the testing schedule. The recommendation is for the following testing schedule. SAT 9: Kindergartenpretest in fall only, grades 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 posttest in spring; WTGR: 3rd grade (state-required); and WKCE: 4th and 8th grades (state required). Eric seconded the motion. Approved. Budget ReportIngrid distributed the budget summary as of 11/13/00.
Greg Anderson will receive the personnel budget at the administrative
team meeting on Wednesday, 11/15. The
final numbers will be presented to the Governing Council at the December 11
meeting. Greg Anderson reported on
the Homework Club funding. An
adjustment will be made to the budget worksheet to include fringe benefits in the
salaries. Final numbers will be presented at the December meeting. Liaison Reports
Badger Ridge Site Council Pat Krantz reported that the magazine sale is going well.
The Halloween party was discussed for the future.
Badger Ridge is also discussing school wide goals and working on the
district goals. Badger Ridge Representative No Report. DWEF Marykay reported that she attended the 11/6 DWEF meeting. A parent representative is still needed. DWEF spoke about GOAL 2003 that was created in November 1998. Parent Round Table No
Report. Teacher Representative Jessica Monk reported that things are being done in the classrooms since the last meeting, but there are still other issues that need to be resolved. Teachers are gathering a list of items that still need to be done at the school. Summer School 2001Summer school will be funded out of the 2001-2002 school budget. Chris Uelmen discussed summer school and distributed a summary that includes number of days, number of hours per day and number of weeks. Students attend summer school according to their current grade level in 2000-2001. Ingrid will readjust the total numbers to include fringe benefits. Governing Council will vote whether to include summer school in the 01-02 budget at the December meeting. Budget Committee 2001-2002Greg distributed the budget cycle. The budget committee needs to meet the last full week of November. Greg Anderson, Amy Willson, Chris Uelmen and Ingrid Beamsley will be part of the budget committee. Parents will be asked if they would be interested on being on the committee. A newsletter will go home by the end of the week. The budget interests of Upham Woods will be discussed at the December 11 Governing Council. Hiring Committee 2001-2002The hiring committee will meet the first full week of December. Greg Anderson, Jessica Monk, Chris Uelmen and Ramona Gasser will be included in the hiring committee. Parents will be asked if they would be interested on being on the committee. A newsletter will go home by the end of the week. Issues from the committees will be brought to the December 11 Governing Council meeting. Curriculum
Committee
Eric Bayler reported that Lynn Schweber and he have worked on the science curriculum. The science committee is meeting on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. The committee is looking at how to enrich the current science program. The committee is also looking at grade 6-8 science texts. They will compare CKCS science curriculum again with the Wisconsin standards. They will also look at a science club and class challenges. Eric reported that the science committees timeline is a year and a half. Eric also reported on the GLOBE grant by University of Wisconsin. CKCS applied for the grant and will receive, if awarded, consultation, materials and possibly some equipment purchased by the University of Wisconsin. The grant also includes a workshop for teachers over the summer. Eric reported that the math committee would look at math curriculum and again see how it compares with Wisconsin standards. The committee will also look at possible replacements for the Saxon textbook. They will also look at how to enrich the math program. Marykay reported that the math committee was able to address the Integrated Math issue in six months and applauds the committees efforts. Goals 2003Greg will discuss at the administration meeting on November 15. He will bring information to the December 11 Governing Council. The next CKCS Governing Council meeting will be on Monday, December 11, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. at Badger Ridge/CKCS LMC. Agenda items need to be given to Ingrid by 12/7/00.
