CORE KNOWLEDGE CHARTER SCHOOL GOVERNING COUNCIL

October 9, 2000

 

The regular meeting of the Core Knowledge Charter School Governing Council was held on October 9, 2000 at Badger Ridge/Core Knowledge LMC.  Notice requirements were met and a quorum was present.  Governing Council members in attendance:  Greg Anderson, Eric Bayler, Leslie Gilbert, Jessica Monk, Nye Pelton, Amy Willson, Bill Lemberg and Marykay Zimbrick.  The meeting was called to order by President Marykay Zimbrick and the mission statement was read.  The minutes were approved as read.

 

Audience Participation

Eric Bayler thanked Marykay Zimbrick for the Parent Round Table presentation.

 

Budget Report

Ingrid Beamsley distributed the budget summary for CKCS.

 

Consent Agenda Items

Leslie Gilbert moved to approve minutes under consent agenda items.  Second by Amy Willson.  Approved.

 

Governing Council/Mutual Representation

Marykay introduced Bill Lemberg to Governing Council as the Badger Ridge representative.  Eric moved to approve Badger Ridge representation on Governing Council with limited voting privileges.  Second by Nye Pelton.  Approved.

 

Liaison Reports

A.         Middle School Site Council – Pat Krantz reported that the magazine sale is kicking off in November.  Where the money will go has not been decided upon yet.  Pat also mentioned that the Badger Ridge staff would like to get together with the CKCS staff.

 

B.         Badger Ridge Representation- No Report.

 

C.            DWEF- Eric reported that the school is still looking for other parent representation on DWEF.  He reported that the district’s goal is that by June 2003, each student will demonstrate proficiency in meeting the Verona Area School District’s academic standards.  It was also discussed that all sites have goals and the district has goals for all sites.  The question is how to measure proficiency and what are the educational plans of each student.  Greg Anderson will contact Linda Christensen about the district-wide committee on standards.

 

D.        Parent Round Table – Pat Rohrer did not report because everyone at Governing Council attended the Parent Round Table.

 

E.            Teacher Liaison – Jessica Monk reported that teachers are still concerned on certain weekly issues, such as lowering of paper towels, lowering of pencil sharpeners, EEN service, etc.  Teachers are very supportive of the school and would like to have some concerns dealt with as soon as possible.  Marykay reported that these issues will remain on the table until they are completed and solved.  Greg also reported that contacts are being made each day to solve the problems.  Greg will also be meeting with Elise Frattura, Director of Student Services, the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.

 

Program Support Manager Update

Ingrid reported on the Comprehensive School Reform sub-grant by Department of Public Instruction.  There is a two-day CESA retreat required for all applicants.  The grant is due January 8, 2001.  Ingrid also reported that State Superintendent John Benson will visit Core Knowledge Charter School on October 11, 2000.

 

Director’s Report

A.  Greg Anderson distributed the Annual Working Agreement between CKCS and Badger Ridge Middle School.  The art room space is being changed for the second semester.  A clarification needs to be made on Upham Woods. The question is if the fees that CKCS pays to BRMS for programs include Upham Woods.

B.  Greg reported that he will e-mail Governing Council members the bullet points of the CKCS surveys and what he is responding to.

C.  There was a discussion on the fence in the playground.  The question is if the fence needs to be extended to the baseball field.

 

Standing Committees

Curriculum – Eric Bayler reported that the math committee consensus is to continue with Saxon Algebra ½ for the current 8th grade Algebra ½ class.  This will bolster fundamental skills in preparation for 9th grade Integrated Math I.  The committee will forward a formal recommendation to the Governing Council for vote.  A follow-up math committee meeting will be October 13 with the VASD Director of Instruction, Linda Christensen and the High School Math Department Chairperson, Jim Guy.

Eric also reported that there is a grant available through the University of Wisconsin in Madison for educational outreach.  CKCS can be added as a matching grant for time put into the science curriculum.  A science committee needs to be created.

 

Renewal Update

Renewal update was discussed in the Parent Round Table meeting.

 

The next CKCS Governing Council meeting will be on Monday, November 13, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. at Badger Ridge/CKCS LMC.
